Chicago engagement photo
locations couples love
WELCOME!
My name is Raul Nieto. I am a Chicago Wedding Photographer for couples who want more than pretty photos — I capture emotional, documentary-style stories that take you back to how it truly felt.
You’re newly engaged! Woohoo!
So you’re probably starting to think about where to take your engagement photos in the city. You’ve likely seen or heard of the iconic places Chicago has to offer and you’re excited - but you also want it to feel personal. Something that reflects you two — Your style, your vibes and most importantly, your story.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing couples all over Chicago. There’s definitely many amazing places to choose from, but the following spots are the ones I keep coming back to. They’re not exactly “hidden gems”, but they’re reliable, beautiful and never let me or my couples down. Whether you’re drawn to grand architecture or something a little more laid back, this list is here to inspire and help you decide if one of these spots are a perfect fit for engagement session.
Chicago Cultural Center
If you’re looking for elegant & timeless vibes, the Chicago Cultural Center is a classic spot. With its grand architecture, neutral colors and marble staircases — It’s a perfect place for editorial or even moody vibes. It has definitely been one of my favorites for many more reasons. I personally love this location because it’s perfect for indoor sessions in the winter or when it’s just too hot outside in the summers.
Formal attire will compliment this location
No permit is required as long as your photographer has minimal gear
Photographer’s Tip: Weekday mornings are best. Arrive right when they open at 10am to beat the tourist crowds.
2. The ‘Honeycomb’ in Lincoln Park
You’ve probably seen it on Pinterest or someone else’s engagement session, and for good reason. The Honeycomb (Officially People’s Gas Pavilion) is a unique design that frames the Chicago skyline perfectly behind you. I personally love this location because it offers an incredible mix of architecture and nature. You can even book your wedding to be held here!
Parking can be tricky, but N. Stockton Dr is all free! Just watch-out for tow zones.
Weekdays are best as sometimes weddings and other events can be held at this popular location.
Photographer’s Tip: Ladies this one is for you — Bring walking shoes! Depending on parking, you may have to walk a bit to reach the location :)
3. North Avenue Beach
Looking for iconic skyline pictures? North Avenue Beach gives you grand Chicago views, while keeping the vibe relaxed. It’s perfect for couples who want to lakefront photos. Both casual and formal attire is fitting for this location! I personally love this location because it’s gorgeous year-round.
If you’ve never seen a Chicago sunrise, this is a perfect occasion and place to finally see one.
Since the beach is right there, bring a 2nd outfit if you’re down for beach vibe photos for the 2nd part of your session.
Photographer’s Tip: Avoid mid-day. There is no shade whatsoever, so go early in the morning or later in the evening.
4. The Chicago Riverwalk
For downtown energy and city vibes, the Riverwalk is such a fun location. You’ll get water reflections, tons of cool architectural backdrops, romantic little corners and more. Obviously crowds are difficult to beat for the most part, so this location is for the couples who don’t mind lots of people looking. I personally love this location because it definitely brings urban vibes and it’s full of character.
Please bring shoes that are walking-friendly.
A champagne bottle to pop is perfectly fitting for this location.
Photographer’s Tip: Fellas this one is for you — Book a reservation to eat lunch or dinner around. She will definitely be surprised and appreciate it.
5. Milton olive Lee Park
Just a short walk from Navy Pier, Olive Lee Park is a quiet, peaceful, and unique experience with the city in the background. This space offers a beautiful mixture of nature and city views. I personally love this location because some of the couples I’ve photographed don’t like huge crowds and the hustle and bustle of the city.
Since this location is gated, their schedule is 7am - 8pm.
Great spot for picnic date night vibes.
Photographer’s Tip: If you’re bringing a 2nd outfit, walk over to Navy Pier for an outfit change.
6. Bonus Personal Locations
I always ask my couples one simple question: “What do you two genuinely love doing together?”
Some of the best engagement sessions are in spaces that already feel like you two. Whether it’s your favorite coffee shop, a local brewery for date nights, or simply a peaceful forest preserve you love going to for walks. It’s these kinds of personal places that will make your photos feel more personal and more you.
If your favorite spots are far from the iconic Chicago locations I mentioned above, explore new ones nearby for part two of your engagement session!
Photographer’s Tip: Have your photographer call these places in advance, sometimes they’ll offer an elevated experience and it’s better logistically in case they have a full-house.
I hope you enjoyed viewing these Locations!
Your engagement session shouldn’t just be pretty pictures - it should feel like you! Whether we're chasing golden hour at the lake or having a good cup of coffee — My goal is to create a session that tells your story for years to come.
